Preview
After a strong third-place finish at
the 1998 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, the 1999 edition of the
Golden Rams men's tennis team is expected to contend for the PSAC crown this spring.
The team is returning all six starters and
has increased its depth with the addition of Chris Kyper, a transfer from Kutztown, and
the return of veteran Dave MacKenzie, who played as high as fourth singles in the lineup.
Four of the six returning starters gained
confidence and experience by reaching the finals in the 1998 PSAC Championships.
Troy Miller and Scott Falatek form the
potent one-two punch for the Golden Rams at first and second singles, as well as first
doubles, while Chris Fiorello, Joe Dianna and Kimo Aweau complete the solid nucleus.
The Golden Rams schedule remains difficult
with matches against Division I opponents Lehigh, Drexel, LaSalle, and Delaware. The
PSAC foes include Millersville, Kutztown, and East Stroudsburg.

Mike Harding Resigns
as WCU Men's Tennis Coach
WEST CHESTER
UNIVERSITY of PA - West Chester University of Pennsylvania has announced the
resignation of head mens tennis coach Mike Harding.
Harding served as the
Golden Rams part-time mens coach from 1996-98. In those three seasons he compiled a
37-25 record.
Harding began his career at
WCU serving as both the mens and womens coach from 1990-96. He compiled a
41-41 record during his tenure as the womens coach, and a career mark of 98-86 with
both programs.
In 1992 Harding won the
PSAC Mens Coach of the Year award. In 1988 he was named the East Coast
Conferences Women Tennis Coach of the Year at Rider University. He served as both
mens and womens head coach at Rider from 1986-88.
A 1985 graduate of Temple
University, Harding was a four-year varsity starter for the Owls. He was part of a duo
which captured the 1984 Atlantic 10 Doubles Championship.

Greg Stipa Named
Interim Men's Tennis Coach
Golden Rams
begin season 1-1 under new leadership;
Opener produces 9-0 win vs. Lincoln
WEST CHESTER, PA
- Greg Stipa has been named interim head mens tennis coach at West Chester
University.
Stipa replaces interim Lee
Morris who resigned after a month due to an unforeseen increase in his responsibilities in
his full-time position at Radley Run.
Stipa comes to West Chester
University as a successful athlete and coach/instructor of tennis in the Chester County
area.
The owner and president of
the Penn Oaks Racquet & Fitness Club in the West Chester area, Stipa has been
extremely involved in the development of advanced athletes on the collegiate and
professional level for almost six years.
He served as the head
tennis professional and director of racquet sports at the Kennett Square Golf and Country
Club in Chester County. Prior to his assignment in Kennett Square, Stipa was the assistant
tennis professional at the Overbrook Golf Club in Bryn Mawr, PA.
An active platform tennis
player for the past 10 years, Stipa and his partner, George Zink, have placed second in
the nation in the Mens American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) for the past
three years. Stipa has also been elected to the National Presidents Cup Team every
year since 1990, and he was chosen by APTA for the European Tour in 1992.
A resident of Chester
County, Stipa received a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Villanova
University in 1989 where he played on the Wildcats baseball team.
New coach, new
season has Rams set for 99
WEST CHESTER,

After his first week of
practice with the team, interim head coach Greg Stipa was "pleasantly surprised"
with the Golden Rams strong talent and depth.
"All eight of the
athletes are very good," he said.
Many of the returning
starters gained confidence and experience by reaching the finals of the 1998 PSAC
Championships.

Golden Rams begin
season 1-1
WEST CHESTER,
PA West Chester University interim head coach Greg Stipa earned his first
collegiate victory as the Golden Rams defeated Lincoln University 9-0 on the courts of
South Campus Tuesday, March 23.
The Golden Rams suffered a
7-0 loss at the hands of Division I power Delaware on March 25. It was the Blue Hens
ninth match of the season.
The Golden Rams won the
doubles competition as seniors Troy Miller (Red Lion/Red Lion) and Scott
Falatek (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth Whitemarsh) swept their Lincoln counterparts
8-0. Miller then won at first singles 6-1, 6-0, while Falatek swept second singles 6-2,
6-0.
Third singles went to
sophomore Joe Dianna (Lancaster/Penn Manor) 6-0, 6-2, and fourth singles was
an easy win for junior Chris Fiorello (Yardley/Pennsbury) 6-0, 6-0. Fiorello
and Dianna took the second doubles set 8-1
Third doubles was handled
by junior Dave MacKenzie (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury) and sophomore Chris
Kyper (West Chester/Salesianum) 8-4. Kyper then captured fifth singles 6-0, 6-0,
while MacKenzie grabbed sixth singles 6-0, 6-2.

Golden Rams Rebound
From 1-4 Start to Win 3 Straight

WEST CHESTER, PA
- After starting the season 1-4, first-year head coach Greg Stipa and his West Chester
University mens tennis team rebounded to steal three straight home victories last
week and climb to 4-5 on the season.
The Golden Rams swept
Division I LaSalle (8-1), Cabrini (9-0) and Scranton (6-3) to wrap up their home schedule.
They now begin a road trip which will feature two ventures to Millersville (once for the
Millersville Duals), East Stroudsburg and Eastern. WCUs journey will finish at
Bloomsburg for the 1999 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships April 23-25.
The Golden Rams
end-of-the-season sojourn began at Philadelphia Textile on April 13 with a tough 7-2
defeat.
The Golden Rams are being
led by senior standouts Scott Falatek (Plymouth Whitemarsh/Plymouth Meeting)
and Troy Miller (Red Lion/Red Lion) who have teamed up for an outstanding
6-3 mark at first doubles. During WCUs three-match win streak, Falatek and Miller
won doubles matches over Cabrini (8-0), Scranton (8-0) and LaSalle (8-1).
Individually, Falatek was
perfect at second singles, while Miller was flawless at first. Miller won 6-1, 6-3 over
Jeff Rucinski of Scranton; 6-2, 6-3 over Pete Pietranik of Cabrini; and 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 over
Division I Ryan Gargullo of LaSalle.
Falatek, meanwhile,
defeated Billy Hughes (Scranton, 6-4, 6-3), Greg DiAntonio (Cabrini 6-0, 6-0) and Rehan
Chauldhey (LaSalle, 6-2, 6-2).
Sophomore Joe Dianna
(Penn Manor/Lancaster) was victorious in two of WCUs three wins at third
singles. He battled to a 6-7, (7-5), 6-2, 7-5 triumph against Scranton, and he picked up a
6-0, 6-1 win vs. Cabrini.
Dianna then teamed up with
junior Chris Fiorello (Pennsbury/Yardley) at second doubles for an 8-1
triumph vs. Cabrini and an 8-2 stomping of LaSalle.
Fiorello picked up a pair
of wins during the mini-streak by taking LaSalles fourth singles player 4-6, 6-3,
6-0 and sweeping his Cabrini opponent 6-0, 6-1. However, Fiorello may be lost for the
season due to an injury.
WCUs fifth singles
player, sophomore Chris Kyper (West Chester/Salesianum) won three straight
matches, claiming the fifth singles events vs. LaSalle (6-1, 6-2) and Cabrini (6-0, 6-1).
He then moved up to fourth singles to fill in for Fiorello, winning 6-3, 7-5 vs. Scranton.
Junior Dave Mackenzie
(Pennsbury/Fairless Hills) grabbed sixth singles wins against both Cabrini (6-0,
6-0) and LaSalle (6-4, 4-6, 6-3), while freshman Dan Phipps (Glenmoore/St. Joseph's
Prep) earned his first collegiate victory on April 13 at sixth singles when he
defeated Philadelphia Textiles Rich Nevius 6-3, 6-4.

Rebound to Forge .500 Record After 1-4 Start

Third in PSAC Championships at 1st Singles & 1st Doubles
BLOOMSBURG, PA
- Senior Troy Miller (Red Lion/Red Lion) finished third at first
singles, then teamed up with senior Scott Falatek (Plymouth
Meeting/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) for a third-place finish at first doubles as the
West Chester University men's tennis team placed fifth at the 1999 Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championships.
The two-day event was held
April 24 & 25 in Bloomsburg, PA. Bloomsburg finished first with 71 team points, while
Millersville was second (58.5) and Kutztown third (52). Edinboro (43) eked by WCU (39).
Slippery Rock (30.5) and East Stroudsburg (21) rounded out the seven-team field.
Miller defeated Brian
Zansitis (Kutztown) 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, lost to Wes Kintner (Millersville) 6-2,
6-1 in the semifinals, but then took third place by beating Adam Bartsch (Edinboro) 6-4,
6-2.
Falatek was fourth at
second singles, winning his opening-round match over Bryan McConnell (Edinboro) 6-2, 6-2.
He lost to Marcus Nilsson (Bloomsburg) 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals and Tom Bixler
(Kutztown) 6-3, 6-3 in the third-place match.
WCUs third and fourth
singles players took fifth. Sophomore Joe Dianna (Lancaster/Penn Manor)
swept Rob Dulin (ESU) 6-0, 6-1 in the fifth-place match at third singles after receiving a
bye in the consolation semifinals.
Sophomore Chris Kyper
(West Chester/Salesianum, DE) defeated A.J. Jones (ESU) 6-0, 6-2 in the
consolation semis and Chad Berkhammer (Slippery Rock) 6-1, 6-2 in the fifth-place match.
Miller and Falatek reached
third place at first doubles by beating Ben Lehman and Scott Dingman (Slippery Rock) 8-0.
The duo lost to Wes Kintner and Pepe Garriga (Millersville) 8-6 in the semifinals, but
rebounded with an 8-4 third-place victory over Shane Marraccini and Jared Skemp
(Edinboro).
Dianna and junior Chris Fiorello
(Yardley/Pennsbury) grabbed fifth at second doubles by blanking Rob Dulin and Nana
Yaw Adoo (East Stroudsburg) 8-0 in the consolation semis, then edging Tom Okulski and Brad
Varrico (Slippery Rock) 8-6 in the fifth-place match.
Kyper and junior Dave
Mackenzie (Fairless Hills/Pennsbury) were also fifth at third doubles. The duo
defeated Blake Richetta and Chris Becker (Edinboro) 8-2 after receiving a bye in the
consolation semifinals.
The Golden Rams used a
strong late-season run for their solid performance at the 1999 PSAC Championships. After
beginning the season 1-4, WCU rebounded to post a final 7-7 mark. The Golden Rams captured
three of their final four matches, including a 9-0 win over Cheyney on April 27.
Without the services of
Miller and Falatek, the Golden Rams mixed up their lineup which led to a perfect result -
every score was 8-0, 8-0 at singles and 8-0 at doubles. Cheyney defaulted at sixth singles
and third doubles.
Fiorello, Kyper, Mackenzie
and Phipps won 1-4 singles, while sophomore Terren Myers (Philadelphia/Roxborough)
competed in and won his first match of the year at fifth singles.
Myers and Phipps claimed
second doubles, and Fiorello and Kyper were victorious at first doubles.
The Golden Rams also picked
up an 8-1 win against East Stroudsburg on April 21. Miller (6-1, 6-0), Falatek (6-0, 6-1),
Dianna (6-1, 6-0), Kyper (6-2, 6-2), Mackenzie (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) and Phipps (6-0, 6-2)
posted victories from 1-6 singles, while Miller and Falatek took first doubles 8-2. The
third doubles match went to WCUs Dianna and Mackenzie 8-0.
The Golden Rams had a
tougher match against Slippery Rock University at the Millersville Duals on April 18.
Miller and Falatek (8-2) and Kyper and Phipps (9-8) gave the Golden Rams an early 2-1 lead
after the doubles matches.
Then Miller (6-1, 6-2),
Falatek (6-0, 6-2) and Kyper (1-6, 7-6, 7-6 - 7-1 tie-breaker) captured first, second and
fourth singles, respectively. Diannas victory at third singles (6-1, 6-1) nailed
down the 6-3 win.
