Preview

After a strong third-place finish at the 1998 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, the 1999 edition of the Golden Rams men's tennis team is expected to contend for the PSAC crown this spring.

The team is returning all six starters and has increased its depth with the addition of Chris Kyper, a transfer from Kutztown, and the return of veteran Dave MacKenzie, who played as high as fourth singles in the lineup.

Four of the six returning starters gained confidence and experience by reaching the finals in the 1998 PSAC Championships.

Troy Miller and Scott Falatek form the potent one-two punch for the Golden Rams at first and second singles, as well as first doubles, while Chris Fiorello, Joe Dianna and Kimo Aweau complete the solid nucleus.

The Golden Rams schedule remains difficult with matches against Division I opponents Lehigh, Drexel, LaSalle, and Delaware.  The PSAC foes include Millersville, Kutztown, and East Stroudsburg.

Greg Stipa Named Interim Men's Tennis Coach

Golden Rams begin season 1-1 under new leadership;
Opener produces 9-0 win vs. Lincoln

WEST CHESTER, PA - Greg Stipa has been named interim head men’s tennis coach at West Chester University.

Stipa replaces interim Lee Morris who resigned after a month due to an unforeseen increase in his responsibilities in his full-time position at Radley Run.

Stipa comes to West Chester University as a successful athlete and coach/instructor of tennis in the Chester County area.

The owner and president of the Penn Oaks Racquet & Fitness Club in the West Chester area, Stipa has been extremely involved in the development of advanced athletes on the collegiate and professional level for almost six years.

He served as the head tennis professional and director of racquet sports at the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club in Chester County. Prior to his assignment in Kennett Square, Stipa was the assistant tennis professional at the Overbrook Golf Club in Bryn Mawr, PA.

An active platform tennis player for the past 10 years, Stipa and his partner, George Zink, have placed second in the nation in the Men’s American Platform Tennis Association (APTA) for the past three years. Stipa has also been elected to the National President’s Cup Team every year since 1990, and he was chosen by APTA for the European Tour in 1992.

A resident of Chester County, Stipa received a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Villanova University in 1989 where he played on the Wildcats baseball team.

New coach, new season has Rams set for ‘99

WEST CHESTER, PA - After a strong third-place finish at the 1998 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, the 1999 edition of the Golden Rams men’s tennis team is expected to post another strong finish in ‘99.

The team is returning most of its top players from 1998 and has increased its depth with the addition of Chris Kyper, a transfer from Kutztown, and the return of veteran Dave MacKenzie, who played as high as fourth singles in the lineup.

After his first week of practice with the team, interim head coach Greg Stipa was "pleasantly surprised" with the Golden Rams strong talent and depth.

"All eight of the athletes are very good," he said.

Many of the returning starters gained confidence and experience by reaching the finals of the 1998 PSAC Championships.

Seniors Troy Miller (Red Lion/Red Lion) and Scott Falatek (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth Whitemarsh) form the potent one-two punch for the Golden Rams at first and second singles, respectively. The duo also teams up at first doubles.

Junior Chris Fiorello (Yardley/Pennsbury) and sophomore Joe Dianna (Lancaster/Penn Manor) complete the WCU nucleus.

The WCU schedule remains difficult with Division I Lehigh, LaSalle and Delaware, as well as D-II foes Philadelphia Textile, Franklin Pierce, Millersville, East Stroudsburg and Kutztown. WCU will also compete in the Millersville duals on April 18.

Golden Rams Rebound From 1-4 Start to Win 3 Straight

Scott Falatek, Troy Miller team up for 6-3 mark at first doubles

WEST CHESTER, PA - After starting the season 1-4, first-year head coach Greg Stipa and his West Chester University men’s tennis team rebounded to steal three straight home victories last week and climb to 4-5 on the season.

The Golden Rams swept Division I LaSalle (8-1), Cabrini (9-0) and Scranton (6-3) to wrap up their home schedule. They now begin a road trip which will feature two ventures to Millersville (once for the Millersville Duals), East Stroudsburg and Eastern. WCU’s journey will finish at Bloomsburg for the 1999 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships April 23-25.

The Golden Rams end-of-the-season sojourn began at Philadelphia Textile on April 13 with a tough 7-2 defeat.

The Golden Rams are being led by senior standouts Scott Falatek (Plymouth Whitemarsh/Plymouth Meeting) and Troy Miller (Red Lion/Red Lion) who have teamed up for an outstanding 6-3 mark at first doubles. During WCU’s three-match win streak, Falatek and Miller won doubles matches over Cabrini (8-0), Scranton (8-0) and LaSalle (8-1).

Individually, Falatek was perfect at second singles, while Miller was flawless at first. Miller won 6-1, 6-3 over Jeff Rucinski of Scranton; 6-2, 6-3 over Pete Pietranik of Cabrini; and 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 over Division I Ryan Gargullo of LaSalle.

Falatek, meanwhile, defeated Billy Hughes (Scranton, 6-4, 6-3), Greg DiAntonio (Cabrini 6-0, 6-0) and Rehan Chauldhey (LaSalle, 6-2, 6-2).

Dianna then teamed up with junior Chris Fiorello (Pennsbury/Yardley) at second doubles for an 8-1 triumph vs. Cabrini and an 8-2 stomping of LaSalle.

Fiorello picked up a pair of wins during the mini-streak by taking LaSalle’s fourth singles player 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and sweeping his Cabrini opponent 6-0, 6-1. However, Fiorello may be lost for the season due to an injury.

WCU’s fifth singles player, sophomore Chris Kyper (West Chester/Salesianum) won three straight matches, claiming the fifth singles events vs. LaSalle (6-1, 6-2) and Cabrini (6-0, 6-1). He then moved up to fourth singles to fill in for Fiorello, winning 6-3, 7-5 vs. Scranton.

Junior Dave Mackenzie (Pennsbury/Fairless Hills) grabbed sixth singles wins against both Cabrini (6-0, 6-0) and LaSalle (6-4, 4-6, 6-3), while freshman Dan Phipps (Glenmoore/St. Joseph's Prep) earned his first collegiate victory on April 13 at sixth singles when he defeated Philadelphia Textile’s Rich Nevius 6-3, 6-4.

Without the services of Miller and Falatek, the Golden Rams mixed up their lineup which led to a perfect result - every score was 8-0, 8-0 at singles and 8-0 at doubles. Cheyney defaulted at sixth singles and third doubles.

Fiorello, Kyper, Mackenzie and Phipps won 1-4 singles, while sophomore Terren Myers (Philadelphia/Roxborough) competed in and won his first match of the year at fifth singles.

The third doubles match went to WCU’s Dianna and Mackenzie 8-0.

The Golden Rams had a tougher match against Slippery Rock University at the Millersville Duals on April 18. Miller and Falatek (8-2) and Kyper and Phipps (9-8) gave the Golden Rams an early 2-1 lead after the doubles matches.

Then Miller (6-1, 6-2), Falatek (6-0, 6-2) and Kyper (1-6, 7-6, 7-6 - 7-1 tie-breaker) captured first, second and fourth singles, respectively. Dianna’s victory at third singles (6-1, 6-1) nailed down the 6-3 win.
