Doug Mascherino and Givon Holmes lead Golden Rams to
sixth-place finish at 2000 PSAC Track & Field Championships

WEST CHESTER, PA - Freshman Doug Mascherino (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) and senior Givon Holmes (Philadelphia/Germantown-Lankenau) split four All-Conference honors and propelled the West Chester University track and field team six rungs up the league ladder at the 2000 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships

The three-day event, hosted by West Chester University in John A. Farrell Stadium May 11-13, saw the Golden Rams finish sixth out of 14 teams by earning 37 points. In contrast, the Golden Rams placed a disappointing 12th last year.

Holmes and Mascherino provided most of the team scoring for WCU. Holmes took third in both the 100 meters (11.03) and 200 meters (22.10), claiming All-PSAC honors in both events.

The PSAC crowns a champion in each event, while the Top 3 are considered All-PSAC.

Holmes’ third-place finishes also earned the Golden Rams 12 team points - six for each bronze-medal result.

Mascherino, meanwhile, collected 16 team points for the Golden Rams by taking second in both the 800m (1:53.71) and 1500m (3:55.75). He was named All-PSAC in both, and his mark in the 1500m was an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time.

The Golden Rams also picked up one team point from Frank Hadley, who finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 143 feet, 1 inch, and two points from junior Wes Derr (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), who placed fifth in the javelin with his throw of 190-2.

Both Hadley and Derr made it to the podium, a place where the Top 6 performers from each event were recognized before the crowd at Farrell Stadium.

Kelly Walton takes 2nd in 10,000 meters

WEST CHESTER, PA - Junior distance runner Kelly Walton (East Berlin/Dover) finished second in the 10,000 meters at the 2000 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships.

The three-day event, hosted by West Chester University May 11-13, saw the WCU women finish 11th with eight team points. Walton accounted for all of WCU’s scoring.

In taking second in the 10,000m, Walton posted a time of 37:43.70 that was good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships. She also earned All-PSAC honors.

Kelly Walton wins 1500 meters at Kutztown
Laura Shultz sets pole vault mark - again;
Golden Rams gear up for PSAC’s

KUTZTOWN, PA - Junior distance runner Kelly Walton (East Berlin/Dover) should be brimming with confidence when the 2000 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships commence at West Chester University this week.

Walton geared up for the PSAC’s last Friday afternoon, May 5, at the Kutztown PSAC Tri-Meet in Kutztown, PA, by capturing the 1500-meter race in a time of 4:54.90.

Although the Golden Rams saw their dual-meet record fall to 3-3 with losses to Kutztown (175.5-45) and East Stroudsburg (119.5-45), Walton convinced a tough field that she may be the one to beat as the 14 PSAC institutions converge on John A. Farrell Stadium May 11-13.

In addition to Walton, junior Jackie DiStefano (Broomall/Marple Newtown) was solid in the 800 meters, taking second with a time of 2:28.64. Sophomore Ann Lodge (Greentown/Wallenpaupack) grabbed fourth with her 2:29.21.

The Golden Rams were solid in the relays as well, finishing third in the 4x100m (51.95). Junior Mandy Herzog (Blandon/Fleetwood), freshmen Kelly Horning (Emporium/Cameron) and Laura Shultz (Spring Grove/Spring Grove), and sophomore Michele Delaney (Willow Street/Solanco) teamed up to win the proverbial bronze medal.

Shultz then joined DiStefano, Lodge and Walton in claiming second place in the 4x400 (4:24.03).

At the Millersville Metrics in Millersville, PA, on April 29, Herzog and Horning each qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 100 meters. Herzog recorded a time of 12.98, while Horning posted a 13.00. Herzog also claimed sixth place in the 100m hurdles (15.75). Sophomore Karin Huffnagle (Mt. Joy/Donegal) secured her place at the PSAC’s by qualifying in the 200m (26.5).

For the third time this year, Shultz cracked the pole vault school record. At Millersville she set the new WCU standard with a clearance of nine feet (9-0).

Herzog was also solid for the WCU women at the Widener Invitational in Chester, PA, on April 22. The junior posted a personal best time of 15.85 in the 100m hurdles. She finished sixth in the event.

Walton took sixth in the 1500m by posting her best time of the year (4:47.97), while junior Steph Moss (Shillington/Governor Mifflin) also rolled a six: She placed sixth in the 3000m (11:02.1).

On April 20, the Golden Rams added a dual meet to their schedule with the Wolves of Cheyney University. WCU came away with a 50-20 victory in Farrell Stadium.

Freshman Gina Lochetto (Ambler/Upper Dublin) won the javelin (83 feet), the shot put (32-8 1/2) and the discus (114-7). Her discus throw qualified her for the PSAC’s.

Huffnagle captured both the 100m (12.8) and 200m (27.4) events, qualifying for the PSAC Championships with her 100-meter time. Herzog stole the 110m hurdles with a 16.4, while Delaney won the 400m with her 1:05.7.

Doug Mascherino named PSAC Men’s Track Athlete of Week
Givon Holmes captures 200m at Kutztown;
WCU gets home field advantage at 2000 PSAC’s

KUTZTOWN, PA - In their final tune-up for the 2000 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships, the West Chester University Golden Rams split the PSAC Tri-Meet at Kutztown on Friday afternoon, May 5.

The WCU men posted 88 team points, finishing ahead of East Stroudsburg (72) but behind Kutztown (165). The Golden Rams completed the dual-meet season 5-1.

Freshman Doug Mascherino (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) was the top Golden Ram performer at Kutztown. The rookie runner won the 1500 meters (3:54.66) with a personal best time that also happened to be an NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying mark.

Mascherino was also instrumental in WCU’s second-place finish in the 4x400m relay. He anchored the quartet of sophomore Vince Zingaro (Glenmoore/Kings, OH), freshman Scott Burns (Morton/Strath Haven) and sophomore Jim Gahagan (Jenkintown/Cardinal Dougherty) that posted a time of 3:27.51.

Mascherino’s efforts earned him the PSAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honor. He will now test his skills against the best of the conference this Thursday-Saturday as the PSAC Championships commence in John A. Farrell Stadium.

Equally impressive at Kutztown was Givon Holmes (Philadelphia/Germantown-Lankenau). The senior won the 200m with a personal best time of 21.8, and he was part of the second-place 4x100 relay team which checked in with its best time of the year (43.08).

That foursome also featured junior Todd Reinert (Birdsboro/Twin Valley), and sophomores Ryan Oxenford (Stowe/Pottsgrove) and Brian Norris (Lancaster/Penn Manor). In the field events, Reinert won the long jump (22-1) and Oxenford finished third in the pole vault (13-60).

Freshman Mike Orzechowski (Hatboro/Upper Moreland) took second in the 3000m steeplechase (10:16.17), while the discus saw Frank Hadley (Ambler, PA) claim third (138-11). Junior Wes Derr (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) placed second in the javelin with his throw of 182-4.

The Mascherino-Holmes Show at Kutztown should not have come as a surprise. On April 29 at the Millersville University Metrics in Millersville, PA, the duo helped score 32 team points for the Golden Rams.

Mascherino captured the 800 meters in a time of 1:54.49, while Holmes won the 100m with an 11.03. He was also third in the 200 meters (22.00).

Derr grabbed a third-place finish for WCU in the javelin competition. He launched the javelin a strong 185-11 to take the bronze medal.

Although Gahagan did not place in the 400 meters, his time of 50.4 qualified him for the PSAC’s.

On April 22 in Chester, PA, freshman Pat Flanagan (Wayne/Radnor) made his appointment to appear in the PSAC Championships at the Widener University Invitational. Flanagan qualified for the PSAC’s with his fifth-place finish in the 5000 meters (15:35.20).

Derr wound up taking second in the javelin with a toss of 180-7.

Both Mascherino and Orzechowski set personal records in their respective events. Mascherino earned a 3:59.15 in the 1500 meters, a mark he would eventually blow past at Kutztown. Orzechowski, meanwhile, took eighth in the 3000m steeplechase (10:03.3) with his quickest time ever.

On April 20, the Golden Rams added a dual-meet to their schedule. WCU tamed the Wolves of Cheyney University 51-31 by winning eight individual events.

Derr captured the javelin (185-1), while Hadley swept both the shot put (38-3) and the discus (134-5 1/2). The long jump belonged to Reinert (22-0 1/2).

In the pole vault, the Golden Rams claimed victory behind the leap of Oxenford (13.6). The high jump crown was cradled by junior Joel Musika (Lansdale/North Penn) who won with a leap of 6-2.

In the sprint events, Gahagan won both the 200m (23.3) and 400M (51.1) for WCU.

For the third time this year, freshman pole vaulter Laura Shultz (Spring Grove/Spring Grove) has broken the school record. At Millersville she set the new WCU standard with a clearance of 9-0.

April 17

Laura Shultz Sets Golden Ram Pole Vault Record
WCU women finish second at the PSAC Quad Meet;
Randler sweeps three events at CCTM

WEST CHESTER, PA - Freshman pole vaulter Laura Shultz (Spring Grove/Spring Grove) has no problem flying through the air under the lights of John A. Farrell Stadium.

Well maybe the lights had not quite come on when she set the West Chester University women’s pole vault record on April 7, then snapped it again a week later.

But that wouldn’t matter for Shultz, who led the Golden Ram women’s track & field team to a second-place finish at the PSAC Quad Meet on April 7 at WCU’s South Campus. She cleared the bar in the pole vault competition at seven feet, 10 inches - the best flight in WCU history.

Seven days later at the Chester County Tri-Meet in Farrell Stadium - a match that featured Lincoln and Cheyney - Shultz upped the WCU record to 8-2. Both times she won the event.

Now her eyes are peering toward the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships which will be contested in Farrell Stadium May 11-13.

As a team, the Golden Rams elevated their record to 2-1 after the PSAC Quad Meet. The four-team event, hosted by WCU, featured PSAC schools Cheyney, East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg.

ESU captured the event by scoring 150 team points. WCU finished second with a 112, while Bloomsburg took third (26) and Cheyney finished fourth (17).

Schultz set the tone for WCU in the field events. Freshman Gina Lochetto (Ambler/Upper Dublin) followed her lead by taking second in the discus (107-4), while sophomore Megan Randler (Coatesville/Coatesville) claimed fourth (91-4). Lochetto (86-0) and Randler (81-9) also finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women’s javelin, and then switched places for best WCU performance in the shot put. Randler handled second (33-3) in the shot, while Lochetto’s toss was good enough for third (30-9 ½).

Junior Melissa Good (Bedminster/Pennridge) grabbed third in the long jump (15-7 ½).

The women’s featured race of the evening - the 5000 meters - saw junior Kelly Walton (Eat Berlin/Dover) take third with a time of 19:11.71. She finished just .17 ahead of junior Steph Moss (Shillington/Governor Mifflin) who posted a fourth-place time of 19:11.87.

Walton also competed in the 1500 meters, crossing the finish line in second (4:58.65), while junior Jackie DiStefano (Broomall/Marple Newtown) snagged fourth in a time of 5:16.10.

The women’s 100m hurdles saw the Golden Rams claim second through fourth places. Junior Mandy Herzog (Blandon/Fleetwood) took second (16.56), sophomore Michelle Delaney (Willow Street/Solanco) finished third (17.19) and Shultz crossed the line in fourth (17.36). Herzog also finished fourth in the 100 meters (13.64).

Delaney then improved her finish in the next race - the 400-meter hurdles. She won the event (73:05) by edging Shultz (74:28).

The 400m saw sophomore Ann Lodge (Greentown/Wallenpaupack) and freshman Venetia Ricketts (Philadelphia/Germantown-Lankenau) break the tape in second and third, respectively. Lodge’s time was 1:05.00, while Ricketts posted a 1:10.00.

WCU’s 800-meter representative was sophomore Kelli Williams (Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon TWP), who wound up fourth with a time of 2:36.71.

Sophomore Karen Huffnagle (Mount Joy/Donegal) rounded out WCU’s top performances of the evening with a second-place 27.01 in the 200 meters.

WCU continued its strong performances with a solid outing on April 14 at the Chester County Tri-Meet. The event was hosted by WCU under the lights of Farrell Stadium.

In addition to Shultz setting her pole vault record, Randler won the discus (96-3), shot put (34-9) and the javelin (96-7), while freshman Erin Klim (Montrose/Montrose) took second in the javelin (81-5) and third in the shot put (26-8). Good finished second in the long jump (15-7 ½).

The Kelly’s dominated the running events for WCU. Walton won both the 1500m (5:08.64) and 800m (2:28.82), while freshman Kelly Horning (Emporium/Cameron) took the 100 meters (13.46).

Other top running performances included, Moss, who was second in the 1500m (5:12.35), Huffnagle, who was second in the 400 meters (61.55), and Herzog, who took third in the 100m (13.74).

The Golden Rams dominated the 800m. In addition to Walton winning the race, DiStefano was second (2:31.02), Moss placed third (2:36.66), Williams wound up fourth (2:36.67) and junior Mary Ovelman (Broomall/Newtown Square) placed fifth (2:39.03).

The 200-meter race saw Huffnagle take second (27.99) and Horning claim third (28.45).

The Golden Rams opened up the 2000 outdoor season at the Penn Invitational on March 26. Walton produced the most exciting return of the afternoon by stealing fourth in the 1500 meters (4:50.50) and qualifying for the 2000 PSAC Championships.

The one-day event was held at Penn’s historic Franklin Field.

Golden Ram Sweep PSAC Quad Meet at Farrell Stadium
Givon Holmes dominates sprint events at Chester County Tri-Meet;
PSAC’s coming to WCU

WEST CHESTER, PA - Twice in seven days the West Chester University men’s track & field team has taken a liking to running under the lights at John A. Farrell Stadium.

The results have been encouraging. The Golden Rams won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Quad meet on April 7 by sweeping Bloomsburg, Cheyney and East Stroudsburg, then held their own in the non-team scoring Chester County Tri-Meet featuring NCAA Division III Indoor National Champion Lincoln University and the Wolves of Cheyney.

Not only have the Golden Rams steadily improved their individual performances, but they are becoming extremely familiar with the courses, crosswinds, idiosyncracies and nuances of this year’s PSAC Championship site: WCU’s John A. Farrell Stadium.

The Golden Rams will host the league’s best May 11-13. The three-day event will begin in the morning and run throughout the late afternoon. All 14 PSAC schools will send men’s and women’s teams to the Championships.

The Golden Rams, meanwhile, improved its record to 3-0 on the season after the PSAC Quad on April 7. WCU edged out East Stroudsburg 155-144, defeated Cheyney 155-38, and crushed Bloomsburg 155-9.

The Golden Rams jumped out to a great start when Frank Hadley won the discus with a throw of 110 feet, 8 inches. They then received a big boost later in the evening when sophomore Vince Zingaro (Glenmoore, PA/King’s, OH) won the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:02.7. Freshman Mike Orzechowski (Hatboro/Upper Moreland) followed close behind Zingaro, taking third with his 10:10.5.

The Golden Rams continued to score team points in the field events as sophomore Ryan Oxenford (Stowe/Pottsgrove) placed second in the men’s pole vault (13-6) and third in the long jump (19-6), while sophomore Jason Tokolics (Coatesville/Coatesville) grabbed second in both the triple jump (40-0) and long jump (20-10 ¼).

Freshman Kyle Almony (Mt. Wolf/Northeastern), fresh off his PSAC Men’s Swimming Rookie of the Year honor, transferred his athletic ability to the outdoor arena and claimed fourth in the triple jump (38-8). He was also fourth in the long jump (17-2).

The Golden Rams also dominated the javelin. Junior Wesley Derr (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) led a trifecta of WCU athletes to finish in the Top 4 after he won the event with a distance of 190-3. David Metzeger took third (155-2) and Hadley grabbed fourth (144-10).

Hadley finished fourth in the shot put as well, tossing the weight 38-10. Freshman Bill Layne’s (Oxford/Oxford) throw landed just an inch behind Hadley’s as the rookie finished fifth (38-9).

In the high jump, junior Joel Musika (Lansdale/North Penn) took third with a leap of 6-0, while senior Givon Holmes (Philadelphia/Germantown-Lankenau) was fourth with his clearance of 5-0.

Most productive in the running events, Holmes blistered the field in the 100 meters (11:13), while junior Todd Reinert (Birdsboro/Twin Valley) finished fourth (11:37.5).

The Golden Rams continued to pile up the team points by sweeping the top two places in the 1500 meters. Freshman Doug Mascherino (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) won the event (4:13.20) and freshman Pat Flanagan (Wayne/Radnor) took second (4:16.30). In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, freshman Brian Weiss (East Windsor, NJ/Heightstown) placed second (18.67).

Mascherino also won the 800 meters (2:02.11) to lead the Golden Rams in a clean sweep of the event. Freshman Scott Burns (Morton/Strath Haven) took second (2:03.68), freshman Mike Orzechowski (Hatboro/Upper Moreland) finished third (2:05.75) and Flanagan wound up fourth (2:05.85).

The Golden Rams captured the 400 meters as well when sophomore Jim Gahagan (Jenkintown/Cardinal Dougherty) clocked in with a time of 50.87. Junior John Sink (Langhorne/Notre Dame) placed fourth (52.94). Gahagan took second in the 200 meters (22.97), finishing only behind Holmes who won his second event of the night (22.48).

WCU claimed second and third places in the 400-meter hurdles. Weiss took second with his 62:01, while Zingaro was third with a 63:32.

The final event of the evening saw sophomore Greg DiNapoli (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick) end up third in the 5000 meters for the Golden Rams with his time of 16:39.74. Junior Jason McCambridge (Emmaus/Emmaus) finished fourth (16:59.25).

The Golden Ram success at the PSAC Quad carried over to their April 14 Chester County Tri-Meet. Although no team scoring was kept, the Golden Rams still produced strong performances.

Hadley (134-6) and Layne (123-8) went 1-2, respectively, in the discus, and then reversed their positions in the shot put as Layne (39-0) edged Hadley (38-8 ½) by just under two inches. Oxenford easily captured the pole vault (14-0).

The javelin belonged to the Golden Rams after Derr’s thrilling throw of 184-2. He was followed by Metzeger (2nd, 154-2), Hadley (3rd, 137-8) and Layne (4th, 137-0).

Friday evenings and the sprint events seem to meet the needs of Holmes. WCU’s best shot at an individual PSAC crown improved when Holmes won both the 100m (11.21) and 200m (22.69) events. Reinert placed third in the 100m (11.47), while Gahagan was second in the 200m (23.24). Reinert was also second in the long jump (22-2 ¾).

Flanagan (4:10.97) and Orzechowski (4:15.47) also went 1-2 in the 1500 meters for WCU.

The Golden Rams opened up their outdoor season on March 26 at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational in Philadelphia. The one-day event was hosted by Penn at its historic Franklin Field.

Oxenford recorded the seventh highest pole vault height in West Chester University history with a clearance of 14-5 ¼. He finished third in the event by posting the best height of his career.

Other outstanding contributions for the men came from Mascherino, who qualified for the PSAC’s with a personal record time of 4:03.2 in the 1500m.

Frank Hadley also took a third-place at the Penn Invitational, grabbing the bronze medal in the discus with a toss of 139-9. Holmes, meanwhile, took third in the 100m (11.10) to qualify for the PSAC’s, and he posted a time of 22.2 in the 200m to improve his PSAC ranking. He had previously qualified for the PSAC’s in the 200m during the indoor season.

Gahagan also turned in a nice time (22.3) in the 200m, just a shade behind Holmes. His mark qualified him for the PSAC’s and was a personal best.

Tokolics checked in with a pair of strong jumping performances, finishing sixth in the long jump (20-3 ½) and second in the triple jump (40-3 ¼). His triple jump leap was a personal record.

Pair of Indoor Records Fall at ECAC’s

BOSTON, MA - Freshman Doug Mascherino (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) set the school record in the 200 meters and freshman Laura Schultz (Spring Grove/Spring Grove) broke the team mark in the pole vault as the West Chester University men’s and women’s indoor track teams produced nine indoor personal records and nine overall personal marks at the 2000 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Indoor Championships.

The event was held at The Armory in Boston, MA, on Saturday, March 4. The WCU women placed 11th with 10 team points, while the men were 10th with 14 team points. Nine WCU athletes earned All-ECAC honors.

Schultz set the school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 7 feet, 5 inches during her first collegiate championship experience. Mascherino, meanwhile, took second in the 800-meter dash with a 1:54.02. His time provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division II Indoor Nationals, and it also snapped the school record set by Garry Kelly in 1997 (155.12).

Although he ultimately did not make the trip to Nationals, Mascherino was one of nine Golden Rams earning All-ECAC honors for his second-place finish.

Junior Kelly Walton (East Berlin/Dover) also earned All-ECAC accolades by taking third in the 5000 meters (18:19.2), while the WCU distance medley relay squad placed fourth with its time of 13:28.7. That foursome, consisting of sophomore Katie Dickerson (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East), sophomore Ann Lodge (Greenwood/Wallenpaupack), junior Mary Ovelman (Broomall/Marple Newtown) and freshman Kelli Williams (Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.), was named All-ECAC for its combined effort.

For the men, senior Givon Holmes (Philadelphia/Germantown-Lankenau), sophomore Vince Zingaro (Glenmoore, PA/King’s, OH) and sophomore Ryan Oxenford (Stowe/Pottsgrove) each earned All-ECAC honors in their respective events.

Holmes placed fourth in the 200m (22.60) by recording a personal best indoor record, while Zingaro took sixth in the 3000m (8:52.3) with his personal best. Oxenford captured sixth in the men’s pole vault with a leap of 14-1 - also a personal best.

Men’s Indoor Track Team Beats Cheyney

WEST CHESTER, PA - The West Chester University men’s indoor track team (1-0) defeated Cheyney University 47-7 on Sunday, February 20, in Hollinger Field House. It was the Golden Rams first and only dual-meet of the season.

Although there were only a handful of events, WCU proved its dominance by having runners place in each event. The strongest showing occurred in the 200-meter dash, which the Golden Rams swept.

Senior Givon Holmes (Philadelphia/Germantown-Lankenau) finished first in 23.7, sophomore Ryan Oxenford (Stowe/Pottsgrove) took second with a 25.1, and sophomore Bryan Norris (Lancaster/Penn Manor) placed third with a 25.4.

In the mile, WCU runners placed first and second by fractions of a second. Freshman Doug Mascherino (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) was credited with the win in a time of 4:37.4, while sophomore Vince Zingaro (Glenmoore, PA/Kings, OH) finished second with the same result. Mascherino was given the win because he touched the tape first.

Junior John Sink (Langhorne/Notre Dame) ran the 400 meters in 58.5, grabbing second in the race. In the special 4 Lap Relay, Mascherino, Zingaro, freshman Brian Weiss (East Windsor, NJ/Heightstown) and Oxenford recorded a mark of 1:22.1 to take the victory.
