Rams Qualify for Postseason Competition HAVERFORD, PA - Twelve different West Chester University indoor track team members used the first meet of the 2000-01 season to qualify for either the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships, the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Indoor Championships, or the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Not a bad start for what could be a promising season for Golden Ram track. Senior distance runner Kelly Walton (East Berlin/Dover) and sophomore middle distance participant Doug Mascherino (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) were the two primary catalysts for the Golden Rams at the Haverford 1st Chance Meet on Thursday afternoon, December 14. The event was hosted by Haverford College in Haverford, PA. Walton provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships by winning the 5000 meters in a stellar time of 17:44.5. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, MA, March 9-10. Walton will now attempt to better her time to earn an automatic pass, or she can still make her way to Nationals with her current time if the field is incomplete come March. She will have plenty of opportunities, however, to quicken her pace after qualifying for the ECAC Division II Indoor Championships and the PSAC Outdoor Championships. The ECACs will be hosted by East Stroudsburg University February 24-25, while the PSACs will be held at Shippensburg University May 10-12. The PSAC does not sponsor an indoor championship. Walton was just one of 12 Golden Rams to claim 13 ECAC qualifying slots at the Haverford First Chance Meet on Thursday. Freshman volleyball player Tanya Novik (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin), an All-PSAC Eastern Division selection as a rookie this fall, qualified for the ECACs in two events, and for the PSACs in the high jump competition. All of this occurred in her first collegiate meet. Novik will be heading to both East Stroudsburg in February and Shippensburg in May after winning the high jump competition at Haverford with a clearance of 5-feet, 1-inch. She also earned a pass to ECACs after taking third in the 200m with a time of 27.1. Junior Katie Dickerson (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East), senior Steph Moss (Shillington/Governor Mifflin), sophomore Kelly Horning (Emporium/Cameron) and senior Mandy Herzog (Blandon/Fleetwood) will all join Novik and Walton at the ECACs after they earned their qualifying passes at Haverford. Dickerson finished the 1500m with a qualifying time of 5:05.7, while Horning posted a 55m mark of 7.7. Herzog had the best time among the Golden Rams in the 55m, turning in a 7.3 to finish second. Moss claimed third place in the 3000m with an 11:08.7. Mascherino posted the best performance among the men for WCU. He finished third in the 1500 meters, setting a personal best indoor time (3:59.9) while also qualifying for both the ECACs in February and the PSACs in May. Joining Mascherino at ECACs will be the senior trio of Mike Orzechowksi (Hatboro/Upper Moreland), Givon Holmes (Philadelphia/Germantown-Lankenau) and Todd Reinert (Birdsboro/Twin Valley). Orzechowski finished seventh in the 5000m with an ECAC qualifying time of 15:53.4, while Holmes (6.5) and Reinert tied for third (6.5) in the 55-meter dash. Junior Jim Gahagan (Jenkintown/Cardinal Dougherty) also qualified for the ECACs with his third-place time of 52.8 in the 400 meters, while sophomore Scott Burns (Rutledge/Strath Haven) captured the 800 meters with his mark of 2:00.8. The Golden Rams didnt qualify for postseason competition in every event, but they did pick up some victories and several solid finishes. Both the mens (3:36.10) and womens (4:25.9) 4x400 relay teams won their respective events, while Holmes captured the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.6. Reinert took the long jump competition with his leap of 21-8 1/2. Herzog was a winner in the 55m hurdles, taking first place with her time of 8.6. |
